Walking by the Spirit: A Journey of Consciousness and Divine Connection

By Susan Fiandach and Connie Wake

"Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh." — Galatians 5:16

The phrase "Walk by the Spirit" is one of the foundational teachings of Christianity. Traditionally, Christians understand this as living in alignment with the Holy Spirit—the active presence of God that guides, comforts, teaches, and transforms us.

Yet for many people exploring spirituality today, there is another way to approach this teaching. While the language may differ, the underlying experience often points toward the same invitation: to live from a deeper awareness than the personality alone.

What if "walking by the Spirit" is not merely a religious instruction, but also a description of a journey into higher consciousness?

Spirit as Layers of Awareness

Imagine consciousness as a pyramid—not in terms of hierarchy or superiority, but as expanding levels of awareness.

At each layer, we move beyond identification with the physical world alone and begin to perceive a greater reality, encompassing our total being.

The Foundation: Imagination and Belief

The first level is imagination.

Many people dismiss imagination as "just making things up," yet imagination is one of humanity's greatest spiritual gifts. Every invention, every act of creation, every vision of a better future begins in the imagination.

Jesus frequently taught through stories and parables that invited listeners to imagine another way of seeing the world. Likewise, spiritual traditions across cultures recognize imagination as the doorway through which inspiration enters consciousness.

Before we can perceive a greater reality, we must first become willing to believe one exists.

Imagination opens that door.

The Second Layer: Emotional Awareness

The next layer is our emotional sensitivity.

Most people have experienced entering a room and immediately sensing tension, joy, sadness, or excitement before anyone speaks. We naturally pick up information from our environment through feeling.

Some call this empathy.

Others call it energetic sensitivity.

Whatever term we choose, it represents an expansion beyond the traditional five senses. We begin to understand that information can be received through the body and heart as well as through sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell.

Rather than dismissing feelings as irrational, or adversely being swayed by the emotions of others, we learn to listen to them as part of the guidance system around us, offering information insights and discernment.

The Third Layer: Intuition

As awareness deepens, intuition emerges.

Intuition is not necessarily supernatural. It is the natural ability to know something without consciously reasoning through it.

We have all experienced moments of "just knowing"—taking a different route home, calling a friend unexpectedly, or sensing the best decision before logic catches up.

The mind receives far more information than it can consciously process. Intuition is often the language through which deeper wisdom rises into awareness.

Walking by the Spirit requires learning to trust this inner knowing while also applying discernment and wisdom.

The Fourth Layer: Connection and Synchronicity

As consciousness expands, many people begin noticing meaningful coincidences.

  • A person comes to mind and calls moments later.
  • A book appears precisely when needed.
  • A conversation answers a question that was silently held.

Carl Jung called these events synchronicities—meaningful coincidences that reveal an underlying connection between inner and outer reality.

When we begin to recognize these moments, life feels less random and more participatory. We experience ourselves as being in dialogue with the universe.

The walk becomes less about controlling life and more about recognizing the ways Spirit is already moving through it.

The Fifth Layer: Communion Beyond Physical Life

For some, spiritual awareness extends into experiences traditionally called mediumship.

Throughout history and across cultures, people have reported encounters with departed loved ones through dreams, impressions, symbols, signs, and direct communication.

Whether viewed through a religious lens or a spiritual one, these experiences often carry the same message:

Love continues.

Consciousness continues.

Relationship continues.

The purpose of such experiences is rarely to prove something extraordinary. More often, they offer healing, reassurance, forgiveness, and a deeper understanding of our interconnectedness.

The Pinnacle: Union with Divine Source

Beyond all spiritual experiences lies something greater.

Beyond intuition.

Beyond signs.

Beyond psychic impressions.

Beyond even the desire to know.

There is simply the experience of Divine Presence.

Christian mystics have called it union with God.

Eastern traditions speak of enlightenment.

Modern spiritual seekers may call it Higher Consciousness, Source, Universal Mind, or simply Love.

The names differ.

The experience points toward the same mystery...and the same opportunity to fully experience and express our Self.
